Tons of new Shin Megami Tensei V details and images: story, characters and more

We’ve got some exciting content for fans looking forward to the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei V for Nintendo Switch. Earlier today we got a very interesting batch of details about the game along with new screenshots and artwork.

Thanks to Gematsu, we’ve been able to get our hands on the information translated from Japanese, and now we can bring you these details regarding the plot, characters and more. First of all, this main art has been shared:

Divinity awaits. Go and claim it.

On the other hand, these plot details are provided:

After the cataclysmic tunnel incident, the protagonist enters a ruined Tokyo teeming with demons: a wasteland called Da’at. He merges with a mysterious man, Aogami, to become the doomed being “Nahobino”, and finds new powers to fight demons.

However, it was not only the protagonist who entered Da’at after the collapse incident. His classmates Yuzuru Atsuta and Ichiro Dazai also encounter demons, but somehow manage to reunite with the protagonist, and the three are able to return to Tokyo.

What awaits the three upon their return is the presence of another classmate, Tao Isonokami. According to her, there are two versions of Tokyo: the one they live in and Da’at. The mythical demons of Da’at have emerged from the darkness and have their sights set on humans and Tokyo itself. She reveals that she is a member of the Japanese branch of Bethel, an organisation sworn to fight the demons.

The team decides to join Bethel to protect the people of Tokyo, so Yuzuru and Ichiro will use the power of the demon summoning program, and the protagonist will use the power of Nahobino.

Just when it seems that their peaceful lives as students are returning to normal, an emergency notice arrives from Bethel. Demons have appeared all over Tokyo. The protagonist and his friends go out to protect the people in the affected areas. At the same time, a wave of demons has begun to invade the protagonist’s school, Jouin High School. His classmate, Sahori Itsukishima, is in danger.

As for the characters, here’s what they share:

Tao Isonokami (voiced by Saori Hayami).

Classmate of the protagonist. A third-year student who is a member of the lacrosse club. Caring and kind-hearted, she has had a sixth sense since she was little. She helps the Japanese branch of Bethel and supports the protagonists when they join the organisation.

Yuzuru Atsuta (voice of Kaito Ishikawa)

A friend of the protagonist. Responsible, capable and assertive, he is a principled and upright young man, and fights alongside Bethel in a provisional unit to protect his sister Miyazu. As he wanders through Da’at alongside the protagonist, he gains more skills and vows again to fight to protect the peace of Tokyo.

Ichiro Dazai (voz by Kishi Taniyama)

Classmate of the main character. A cheerful guy, although he can be a bit clumsy at times. He has bad grades and is seen as a loser by most of the other students. His hobbies include making streams, but he also gets involved in the tunnel collapse incident while filming in the Takanawa tunnel and going into Da’at. He accepts Bethel’s request for cooperation and vows to fight the demons, hoping to prove his worth for a noble cause.

Miyazu Atsuta (voice of Ryo Hirohashi)

Yuzuru’s younger sister and the only living member of the family. Shy and reserved, she has a delicate constitution and is often seen visiting the nurse’s office. When Jouin High School is attacked by demons, she too is caught up in the chaos.

Hayao Koshimizu (voice of Kenjiro Tsuda)

Prime Minister of Japan and chief representative of Bethel’s Japanese branch. Calm, composed and strategic, he offers the demon summoning programme to Ichiro and his friends, asking them to help Bethel.

In terms of game mechanics, the following details are provided:

Battle system

This game features the classic command-based turn-based battle system. By attacking enemy weaknesses, the player can increase their turns and gain advantage. However, enemies can also do the same, so be careful! While simple, this battle system rewards reasoning. With new abilities, players can enjoy an even wider range of strategies.

Magatsuhi Skill

During battle, your actions will gradually fill the “Magatsuhi Meter”. Once it is full, you can activate special moves called “Magatsuhi Skills”. In addition to launching powerful attacks, they can also be used to heal and support you. Understanding when to use them is key.

Ability Potentials

All demons have affinities and weaknesses. Abilities that match the affinities of their demons become much more powerful, marked with a “+” ability potential. Conversely, inheriting an ability that matches a demon’s natural weakness leads to a “-” ability potential, making it less powerful. Strategically deciding between the damage you can inflict and the enemy weaknesses you can attack is key. Keep this in mind when creating your party, so you can choose the demons that best suit your personal play style.
