As all videogame fans know, a Metroidvania is a sub-genre of action-adventure videogame based on a non-linear platforming concept. As the name suggests, this sub-genre has its roots in platform games with non-linear elements from the Metroid sagas (this saga was the most influential and well-known when the term had not yet been coined) and Castlevania (it was linked to 2D non-linear platforming from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night onwards). Due to the success of these sagas in the same genre, the term would eventually encompass the entire sub-genre.
These games are basically characterised by a large map with a multitude of interconnected rooms, many of which will be inaccessible initially, as we will need to return once we have obtained a certain item or ability, making backtracking (returning to previously visited places) the order of the day, in order to continue advancing.
